Mara Meza, LMHCA
I work with individual adolescents and adults who are exploring gender identity, evolving sexual and relational identity, repatterning complex trauma, and are seeking a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with themselves.
I meet my clients from a place of compassion, non-judgment, and unconditional positive regard. In our work together I will offer precise and constructive feedback based on my observations of you, of your story, and of our ever-evolving therapeutic relationship. During session I will rely on my understanding of various counseling theories, particularly attachment theory and internal family systems (IFS), to help conceptualize and frame your story in a way that centers and highlights your strengths and values.
Most of my clients tend to “get it” on a cognitive level, but might be looking for help grounding their awareness into their bodies. I put special attention on somatic experiencing and the polyvagal nervous system in helping clients to better know and feel themselves more deeply. It is my deepest wish to see everyone I work with come into a greater sense of home, safety, and knowing within their bodies.
Education and Background
I began my journey in mental health in 2016 working with vulnerable adults experiencing psychosis, manic episodes, houselessness, substance addiction, and suicidal depression. I've worn many hats in this field, ranging from crisis stabilization, relational support, skills building, case management, and team leadership.
In addition to my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from Antioch University, I have also completed additional certification in Sex Therapy. The Sex Therapy program was a crucial factor in my own evolving queer identity, and in the centering of intersectionality in therapeutic work.
